Ejector, Grinder or Sump Pump?

All three sit in a pit in the floor, but they move very different things.

We service

Ejector Pump

Lifts wastewater from a basement bathroom, laundry or bar sink up to the sewer or septic line when it sits below it. Handles soft solids through a 2-inch discharge.

Used for: basement bathrooms and laundry rooms

We service

Grinder Pump

Shreds waste into a slurry, then pushes it through a small pressure line over a long distance or uphill, where a regular ejector can't reach.

Used for: long runs, uphill lines, low-pressure sewer systems

Different job

Sump Pump

Moves groundwater and rain away from the foundation. It never handles sewage, so it can't replace an ejector. See our sump pump service.

Used for: wet basements and high water tables

Signs Your Sewage Pump Is Failing

Catch these early and it's usually a part, not a new pump.

1

Pump Alarm Going Off

The high-water alarm means the basin is filling faster than the pump empties it, often a stuck float or a pump that won't start. Stop using water on that level until it's checked.

2

Basement Toilet or Laundry Backing Up

If only the fixtures on the pump back up, it's the pump. If upstairs drains back up too, the problem is likely your sewer line.

3

Pump Runs Nonstop

A float stuck in the "on" position, or a failed check valve letting water fall back into the basin, keeps the pump cycling until the motor burns out.

4

Sewage Smell From the Pit

A worn lid seal or a loose vent connection lets sewer gas into the basement. The basin should be sealed tight and vented outside.

Ejector & Grinder Pump Repair

We open the basin, test the pump under load and fix the part that failed instead of selling you a new pump.

1

Float Switch

A stuck, tangled or worn float is the most common reason a pump won't start or won't stop.

2

Check Valve

A failed valve lets sewage drain back into the basin, so the pump short-cycles and wears out.

3

Clogged Impeller

Wipes and rags wrap around the impeller. We pull the pump, clear it and check the cutter on grinder models.

4

Alarm & Controls

We test the high-water alarm and control panel so you get a warning before the basin overflows.

Wipes Are the #1 Pump Killer

Even "flushable" wipes don't break down. Keep them, paper towels and grease out of any drain that leads to a pump.

Pump Replacement & Installation

When a repair won't last, we replace the pump or set up a new system sized to how far and how high the waste has to travel.

New sewage ejector pump basin with check valve and vent pipe

Ejector Pump Replacement

A new pump sized for your basin and the height it has to lift.

  • Motor hums but won't pump
  • Pump is 7–10 years old or more
  • Same failure keeps coming back

Best for: existing basement bathrooms and laundry

Grinder Pump Installation

Pushes waste through a small pressure line where gravity and a standard ejector can't.

  • New basement bathroom or suite
  • Long or uphill run to the sewer
  • Replacing a worn grinder unit

Best for: new installs and long, uphill runs

Septic Pump Chambers on Rural Properties

Heavy clay soil doesn't absorb water well, so many rural septic systems here use a raised or filter bed. A pump in a separate chamber lifts the effluent up to it.

How It Works

  1. 1Solids settle in the septic tank.
  2. 2Liquid effluent flows into the pump chamber.
  3. 3When the float rises, the effluent pump doses it up to the raised bed.

Signs the Pump Has Failed

  • The alarm on the outdoor post or panel is on
  • Soggy ground or odour around the tank lids
  • Drains slow down after laundry or showers
  • The bed stays dry while the chamber stays full

We Replace Septic Pumps & Floats

We test the effluent pump, floats and alarm, then repair or replace what failed. Tank due for pumping too? See septic tank pumping.

Sewage Pump Replacement — Tilbury

Our old sewage ejector pump had become noisy and eventually stopped moving wastewater from the basement bathroom. The plumber inspected the existing setup and recommended a replacement. Grinder Pump Blockage Removal — Dresden

The grinder pump at our rural property kept tripping its overload protection. The technician checked the unit and found fibrous material wrapped around the cutting mechanism. He removed the obstruction, inspected the pump and confirmed it was operating correctly. We also received useful advice about what should never go down the drains.

Sewage Basin Odour & Seal Repair — Bothwell

We had an unpleasant smell coming from the utility room whenever our sewage ejector pump operated. NeoFlow traced it to a poorly sealed basin cover and a loose pipe penetration. The plumber corrected the seals and inspected the vent connection. It was a straightforward repair with no unnecessary pump replacement.

Sewage Ejector Discharge Repair — Thamesville

The ejector pump in our basement laundry area was running more often than usual, and the basin seemed to refill after each cycle. NeoFlow found wastewater flowing back through a failing discharge check valve. The plumber replaced the valve, checked the connections and verified that the water level stayed down after the pump stopped.

Ejector & Grinder Pump FAQ

Why is my ejector pump alarm going off?

The basin is filling faster than the pump can empty it. The usual causes are a stuck float, a tripped breaker, a clogged impeller or a failed motor. Stop using water on that level, check the breaker, and call us if the alarm stays on.

Can I flush wipes with an ejector or grinder pump?

No. Even "flushable" wipes wrap around the impeller and jam a standard ejector pump. Grinder pumps cope a little better, but wipes still dull the cutter and clog the line. Flush toilet paper only.

How long does a sewage ejector pump last?

Most ejector and grinder pumps last about 7 to 10 years. A clean basin, a working check valve and no wipes in the line help them reach the top of that range.

Can I use my basement bathroom if the pump stops working?

Not the fixtures connected to the pump. Every flush or load of laundry adds to a basin that can't empty, and it will back up into the basement. Upstairs fixtures on gravity drains usually keep working.

Do I need a permit to install an ejector pump?

Usually, yes. Adding a new ejector system for a basement bathroom is new plumbing work that normally needs a permit from the Chatham-Kent Building Department. A like-for-like pump swap is often treated as a repair. We'll tell you what your job needs before we start.
